EByRome is a scholarly digital project documenting medieval Greek inscriptions from Rome and the surrounding region of Latium, dating from the sixth to the fifteenth centuries. Funded through Italy’s PRIN 2022 research programme, the project brings together teams from the University of Rome Tor Vergata and Sapienza University of Rome, under the direction of Francesco D’Aiuto and Andrea Luzzi. Its central aim is to create a unified census of inscriptions that have never before been comprehensively catalogued and published, many of which have received limited detailed study.
The records cover inscriptions made in diverse ways and on materials including stone, metal, bone, ivory and wood, as well as texts painted or scratched onto different surfaces. Through searchable records and indexes, EByRome supports research into their language, dates, locations, materials, subjects and publication history. The project uses the EpiDoc standard and is published through EFES.
By making these inscriptions accessible, EByRome illuminates the enduring political, religious, cultural and artistic connections between Rome and the Byzantine world
