The European Centre for Governance in Complexity (ECGC) is a Norway-based non-profit organisation established in 2015. Working at the interface between science and policy, it promotes academic research and public debate on public governance, the institutions responsible for it, and how they perform under conditions of complexity. ECGC shares research and analysis relevant to contemporary policy challenges, including critical examination of concepts used in policy discourse.
Its recent work includes a 2025 paper by members Mario Giampietro and Sandra Bukkens, together with Co-Director Silvio Funtowicz, analysing how “bioeconomy” is used in contemporary policy, particularly in the European Union. The centre also highlights research and publications by its members and collaborators, including a European Environment Agency report on governance in complexity. Through its website, ECGC provides information about its work, its people, and opportunities for membership, alongside access to selected publications and commentary.
Its activities connect scholarly perspectives with public discussion, helping audiences consider how governance can respond to complex issues
