ECOMOD (Marine Ecosystem Modelling) is an interdisciplinary team, part of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, composed of scientists with diverse backgrounds (mechanical engineer, bioengineer, oceanographers, mathematicians, physicists, evolutionary biologist), and expertise in hydrodynamics, sediment transport, biogeochemistry, ecosystem modelling, biophysical modelling, and Individual-Based Modelling. ECOMOD focuses on aquatic ecosystems and how these relate to societal matters and has a strong expertise in the development and use of marine ecosystems modelling tools to support the management of the marine environment, particularly for the Belgian waters, but also the Southern Ocean, Benin and Vietnam.

About ECOMOD
ECOMOD is an innovative interdisciplinary team within the Institute of Natural Sciences, dedicated to enhancing scientific understanding of marine ecosystems through rigorous research and advanced modeling techniques. Comprised of experts in hydrodynamics, biogeochemistry, and evolutionary biology, ECOMOD focuses on developing and maintaining the COHERENS modeling system, which aids in simulating various marine processes. Their mission extends to supporting stakeholders and raising public awareness about marine environments, with a commitment to sharing knowledge through open-source software and tools.
Their diverse range of products includes the Demeter multiscale biogeomorphic modeling framework, TidalGeoPro for analyzing tidal channel properties, and VFC for vegetation and flow convolution. ECOMOD also offers support and training activities through the CEBioS program, which focuses on biodiversity and sustainable development. Their expertise is internationally recognized, serving prominent organizations in oceanic research and management, while applying their models to critical issues such as eDNA transport, larval dispersal, and pollutant impacts in regions including the North Sea, Southern Ocean, and Southeast Asia.
