About Edible Schoolyard
The Edible Schoolyard Project is a nonprofit organization that has been transforming public education for 25 years. They use organic school gardens, kitchens, and cafeterias to teach academic subjects and values such as nourishment, stewardship, and community. Their focus is on providing hands-on experiences for students to connect with food, nature, and each other, while addressing the crises of climate change, public health, and social inequality.
Founded in 1995 by chef Alice Waters, the project started as an idea to revolutionize the food experience at a public middle school in Berkeley, California. Today, the Edible Schoolyard at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Middle School serves as a demonstration site and innovation hub for edible education. Their curriculum offers experiential learning opportunities that deepen students' relationship with food, teach cooking and gardening skills, and empower them to effect change in their own lives and communities. With a dedicated staff and an impressive advisory board, the Edible Schoolyard Project continues to make a significant impact in the field of edible education
