The Edinburgh Geological Society (EGS) is a charitable organisation founded in 1834, dedicated to promoting public interest in geology and advancing geological knowledge. One of the UK’s foremost geological societies, it brings together members with varied backgrounds, from beginners to professional geologists, to explore Scotland’s geology and beyond.
EGS offers a programme of winter lectures on Earth science and summer excursions to significant geological sites. Led by experts, these outings give participants the chance to examine rocks, fossils, minerals and geological structures in the field. The Society also produces geological publications, including regional excursion guides, the twice-yearly magazine The Edinburgh Geologist and, jointly with the Geological Society of Glasgow, the Scottish Journal of Geology.
Through its Lothian and Borders Geoconservation Group, EGS works with local authorities and other partners to identify, promote and help protect important local geodiversity sites, while supporting educational and conservation activities. It awards grants for geological fieldwork and projects that further its aims, and recognises achievement through the Clough Medal and Clough Memorial Award.
