About Environmental Defence Society
EDS Aotearoa, also known as the Environmental Defence Society, is a dedicated team of professionals working to improve environmental outcomes for Aotearoa New Zealand. Their purpose is to protect and restore the country's outstanding landscapes, freshwater systems, oceans, and indigenous biodiversity. EDS achieves this by holding businesses and the government accountable, strengthening environmental laws, and promoting good environmental management practices.
Led by a team of experienced individuals, including Chairman and Chief Executive Gary Taylor, Chief Operating Officer Shay Schlaepfer, Policy Director Raewyn Peart, Policy Director Greg Severinsen, Senior Policy Researcher Deidre Koolen-Bourke, Legal & Policy Researcher Fernanda Contreras Caballero, Legal & Policy Researcher Benjamin Tombs, and Events Director Fiona Driver, EDS is actively involved in policy, litigation, events, resources, and advocacy work.
