About The Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park & Hemingway Birthplace Museum
Welcome to the Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park, nestled just west of downtown Chicago in Oak Park, Illinois. Our brand is dedicated to preserving the legacy of Ernest Hemingway, the iconic Pulitzer Prize-winning author. Our main attraction is the Hemingway Birthplace Museum, where you can explore the roots of Hemingway's life and work.
This Queen Anne home, built in 1890 by Hemingway's maternal grandparents, was his birthplace on July 21, 1899. Step back in time as you stroll up the wooden walkway to the front door, experiencing what life was like at the turn of the 20th century. Our restoration efforts have authentically returned the house to its 1890s Victorian heritage, reflecting the furnishings and stories of the young Hemingway.
In addition to our museum, we offer a range of programs and events, including monthly calendars, Hemingway discussion series, writer-in-residence programs, and student scholarships. You can even work from the Hemingway Birthplace to spark creativity in a new environment. Come visit us and discover the foundation of Hemingway's life and work in Oak Park, Illinois
