About ELAR Archive | Berlin
The Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR) serves as a vital repository for preserving and sharing endangered language materials worldwide. Established in 2002 by the generous support of Arcadia, ELAR works in collaboration with the Endangered Languages Documentation Programme to combat the rapid decline of linguistic diversity. Through multimedia collections of audio and video recordings, transcriptions, dictionaries, and more, ELAR safeguards over 550 endangered languages from over 70 countries.
Additionally, ELAR offers training in digital collection creation, metadata management, and data curation. As a founding member of the Digital Endangered Languages and Musics Archives Network (DELAMAN), ELAR is committed to networking with international initiatives to support language preservation efforts. Led by a dedicated team of experts, ELAR welcomes deposits from community members, researchers, and field workers, ensuring the safekeeping and accessibility of valuable language materials for future generations.
