Located just minutes from San Miguel de Allende, El Charco del Ingenio is an extraordinary Botanical Garden and Nature Reserve. It houses an extensive collection of cacti and other succulent plants from Mexico, many of which are rare, threatened, or endangered. Our mission, as a civil society organization since 1991, is to protect and preserve the biocultural heritage by developing an Ethnobotanical Garden dedicated to the conservation and study of the regional flora, as well as promoting environmental awareness in society.
Our botanical collection consists of species from arid and semi-arid regions of Mexico, many of which are rare, threatened, or endangered. The variety of topography and moisture conditions in the reserve provides a diverse and healthy sanctuary for wildlife. With the support of the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT), we conduct research to rescue knowledge about the use of plants in the region, thus revaluing our biocultural heritage.
