World Mosquito Program

The World Mosquito Program (WMP) is a pioneering not-for-profit initiative affiliated with Monash University, dedicated to combating mosquito-borne diseases globally. With a mission to protect communities from illnesses such as dengue, Zika, and yellow fever, WMP employs an innovative method using the bacterium Wolbachia, which significantly reduces the ability of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to transmit these viruses. Launched in 2011, this approach has demonstrated proven effectiveness through extensive trials in various countries, showcasing its potential to create self-sustaining reductions in disease transmission rates.

Operating in 14 countries, including Brazil, Indonesia, and Vietnam, WMP has protected nearly 11 million people by collaborating closely with local governments and communities. The program emphasizes empowerment and sustainability, aiming to enhance public health while fostering community resilience against mosquito-borne threats. As WMP continues to expand its reach and impact, it remains at the forefront of innovative solutions to improve health conditions worldwide, driven by a commitment to scientific research and community involvement.
