About Dr Ella Hawkins
Ella Hawkins is a design historian, author, and artist based in Hereford, England. Her work connects academic research with creative practice, exploring design, material culture, art history, and costume. Her book, Shakespeare in Elizabethan Costume: “Period Dress” in Twenty-First-Century Performance, is available through Bloomsbury. The website also documents her research and writing, alongside projects developed with arts and heritage organisations.
A distinctive part of Hawkins’s practice is biscuit art: edible artworks inspired by museum collections, historical objects, art history, and costumes created for stage and screen. She offers bespoke biscuit artworks and practical biscuit art workshops for participants of all ages, delivered virtually or in person. Her services also include public talks on design history and biscuit art, tutorials and recipes, live demonstrations, and artist residencies. Through these offerings and collaborations, Hawkins brings historical and cultural subjects to audiences in engaging, hands-on ways. Her work combines scholarship, visual creativity, and accessible public engagement, with projects tailored to arts and heritage settings.
