eLwazi is a brand that aims to revolutionize the world of data science in Africa and beyond. Derived from the Nguni word for "knowledge" or "information," and Luganda for "big rock," eLwazi strives to provide an African Open Data Science Platform and associated resources to support the DS-I Africa consortium and beyond. The vision of eLwazi is to provide users with a flexible environment for depositing, sharing, and accessing data, selecting data-specific tools and methods, and deploying tools and workflows tailored to the African context, all with the goal of enabling novel discoveries for health.

Led by the University of Cape Town, eLwazi collaborates with several partner institutions, including the University of the Witwatersrand, Ilifu, University of Stellenbosch, University of Mauritius, Uganda Virus Research Institute, University of Khartoum, USTTB University of Bamako, Broad Institute, EMBL European Bioinformatics Institute, University of California Santa Cruz, and the University of Chicago.

The development and implementation of eLwazi are guided by the consortium's working groups, focusing on areas such as data models, storage, infrastructure, tools and workflows, outreach, training, user support, and sustainability. The initiative is further supported by the Office Of The Director and National Institutes of Health, as well as the National Institution of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. eLwazi is poised to empower data scientists and researchers, driving innovation and discovery in the field of health.
