About Elwha
The Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe is a sovereign, federally recognized Indian Nation with its own constitution and government. The Tribe’s homeland is in the Lower Elwha River Valley and nearby bluffs on the north coast of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, west of Port Angeles. Its connection to this area reaches back to time immemorial and is recognized in the 1855 Treaty of Point No Point. Today, tribal lands encompass about 1,000 acres on and near the Elwha River.
Guided by a mission to build a strong, healthy sovereign nation, the Tribe works to support members’ physical and spiritual well-being, cultural continuity, and economic independence. Its departments and programs provide community services across health care, education and child care, social services, elder support, employment, housing assistance, and public safety. The Tribe also manages natural resource initiatives, including Elwha River restoration, fisheries, habitat projects, and environmental programs. Cultural preservation is central to its work, with resources such as the Heritage Center, library, and Klallam language programs.
