About ExMiners Association of Malawi
Ex-miners Association of Malawi (EMAM) is a non-profit organization that was established by former migrant miners who worked in South African mines. Formally incorporated in 2015 under Malawi's Trustee's Incorporation Act, EMAM aims to improve the lives of ex-miners and their families.
EMAM brings ex-miners together to collaborate on projects and share ideas, advocating for their rights. The association focuses on improving miners' health by addressing issues such as lung diseases, social benefits, compensation, and the impact of climate change on its members and the community.
EMAM works closely with the government of Malawi, specifically the Ministry of Labor, to identify former miners who worked in South African mines but have not yet registered for their unclaimed social security benefits.
Moreover, EMAM has initiatives in place to alleviate poverty among women, especially in light of the socio-economic impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. Additionally, the organization aims to reduce the prevalence of tuberculosis in the mining sector of southern Africa through community strengthening programs.
