About Emigre Fonts
Emigre Fonts is a renowned digital type foundry based in Berkeley, California. Established in 1984 alongside the advent of the Macintosh computer, Emigre quickly adapted to the new digital technology, making them pioneers in the industry. The talented Emigre team, led by Rudy VanderLans and Zuzana Licko, with Tim Starback joining in 1993, gained wide recognition for designing some of the very first digital layouts and typefaces.
Emigre published the iconic Emigre magazine from 1984 to 2005, exploring and showcasing visual communication. Their innovative typefaces featured in the magazine led to the creation of Emigre Fonts, becoming one of the first independent type foundries to utilize personal computer technology for font design and distribution. Their groundbreaking work inspired countless small foundries to follow suit.
Emigre has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Chrysler Award for Innovation in Design and the American Institute of Graphic Arts Gold Medal Award. In 2013, Zuzana Licko was honored with the Annual Typography Award from the Society of Typographic Aficionados. To preserve their rich legacy, Emigre's complete archive was donated to the Letterform Archive in San Francisco in 2016.
Their remarkable magazine is featured in the permanent collections of esteemed institutions such as MoMA New York, The Stedelijk Museum, and The Design Museum. Additionally, Emigre offers a wide range of products, including digital fonts, printed catalogs, type specimens, and books.
