Emilsgugge

Emil’s Gugge is a carnival music association based in Appenzell, Switzerland. Founded in 1972 by carnival enthusiasts who wanted to bring a new highlight to local celebrations, it is described as Appenzell’s oldest and largest Guggenmusik group. The association has around 30 active members, alongside supporting members, and brings together several generations through a shared enjoyment of music and carnival.

Its performances feature brass and percussion, including trumpets, trombones, sousaphones, drums, timpani and woodblocks. Over time, the group has developed a more polished repertoire influenced by modern big-band sound, while retaining the deliberately exuberant, offbeat character of Guggenmusik. Emil’s Gugge performs at carnival events in Appenzell and elsewhere, with its 2026 programme listing parades, gatherings and celebrations across the region.

Distinctive themed costumes are also central to the group’s identity. The website showcases past and current themes, including Waldelfen, Wo ist Walter? and Hutmacher, and offers selected costumes for sale. Its activities foster a welcoming, family-oriented community centred on performing and celebrating carnival.
