AFAC EMPS, the AFAC Emergency Management Professionalisation Scheme, is a leading organization dedicated to advancing professional standards in emergency management in Australia and New Zealand. Our goal is to ensure that all individuals involved in emergency management, whether paid or volunteer, meet the highest technical and ethical standards of practice. Supported by AFAC, the National Council for fire and emergency services in Australasia, AFAC EMPS sets the industry-approved professional standards for training and experience.
These standards are a national consensus on the proficiency and expertise required for emergency management roles. As the only scheme endorsed by AFAC, AFAC EMPS provides national recognition of individuals' professional skills and experience. However, it is important to note that AFAC EMPS does not directly assess individuals for technical competence.
Registration or certification under AFAC EMPS requires prior assessment by a third-party organization. AFAC EMPS offers two informative publications about the scheme, providing in-depth details and a high-level overview. Additionally, we have developed the 'Core Incident Management Team Capabilities' based on thorough research to guide and support practitioners at both the registered and certified levels.
Please note that registration or certification under AFAC EMPS does not grant a license to practice, as jurisdictional laws and policies determine the authority to work in emergency management roles.
