EMSO ERIC (the European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water-column Observatory) is a pan-European research infrastructure dedicated to observing, understanding and protecting the ocean. Established as a European Research Infrastructure Consortium in 2016, it brings together marine research organisations from eight countries: Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Ireland, Norway, Greece and Romania.
The infrastructure operates observatories and regional facilities across European seas, using platforms equipped with advanced sensors to collect long-term measurements from the surface to the deep sea. Its monitoring supports research into marine ecosystems, climate change and ocean-related hazards, including seismic, volcanic and tsunami activity. EMSO also develops and tests technologies for sensors, electronics, control and data acquisition.
EMSO ERIC provides access to its facilities for external researchers and technology developers, including a physical access programme that offers financial and logistical support for research projects and equipment tests. Its work helps improve understanding of ocean processes, strengthen hazard detection and early warning, and inform efforts to protect marine environments and communities.
