The Knowledge Standards Foundation is a global, volunteer-led organization working to build a decentralized network of encyclopedias, which it calls the “encyclosphere.” Rather than creating a single app or central authority, the Foundation develops standards and tools that help encyclopedias connect and make knowledge more accessible across the web. Its mission is guided by the belief that no small group should decide what is known on behalf of everyone.
The Foundation’s projects include tools for searching and reading encyclopedias, with offerings that provide access to more than 30 encyclopedias in 12 languages or to a collection of 65 encyclopedias. These services are described as ad-free, and one is open source. The organization also offers a browser extension that adds Encyclosphere search results to users’ searches, as well as the ZWIBook flash drive, advertised as containing 69,020 books. The Foundation invites developers, designers, writers, editors, marketers, fundraisers, and other supporters to contribute through its community channels, and accepts donations to support its work.
