About 円覚寺 Engakuji
Engakuji, a renowned Zen Buddhist temple, was founded in the latter half of the Kamakura period in 1282 by the then shogun Hojo Tokimune, under the guidance of the Zen master Mugaku Sogen. The temple was established with the noble intention of safeguarding the nation, promoting Zen teachings, and honoring the fallen from the Mongol invasions. Engakuji's name derives from the discovery of the "Engaku Sutra" during its establishment, while its mountain name, Zuikozan, commemorates the legend of white deer gathering to listen to Mugaku Sogen's inaugural sermon.
Over the centuries, Engakuji has been patronized by influential figures, survived fires, and saw revitalization in the late Edo period. Today, it stands as a serene complex upholding the Zen tradition with various meditation sessions and events throughout the year. Visit Engakuji for a tranquil retreat and a glimpse into Japan's rich Zen heritage
