Entomology

The Entomology Lab at Southern Cross University is a research group based in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia. Its work explores insect ecology, physiology, behaviour and biodiversity, including how insect communities vary across environmental gradients and respond to extreme temperatures and climate change. The lab’s research spans practical challenges in agriculture and environmental management.

Projects examine dung beetles’ contributions to nutrient cycling and soil health, as well as the effects of temperature, veterinary chemicals and dung quality on native and introduced species. The team also evaluates approaches to managing and eradicating red imported fire ants in Southeast Queensland, including direct control methods and biological control, while investigating the role of native insects. In macadamia orchards, researchers assess pest species and develop integrated pest management methods.

Other work considers pasture mealybugs and their association with pasture dieback, and evaluates black soldier flies as a feed supplement, with potential applications in food waste reduction and polymer development. The lab shares research through its website, blog and publications
