About Environmental Data & Governance Initiative
Environmental Data & Governance Initiative (EDGI) is an action-oriented research collaborative that advocates for the Environmental Right to Know (ERTK). They believe that individuals should have access to information about environmental conditions and be able to make informed decisions. The organization focuses on documenting and analyzing changes to federal environmental data and governance practices to ensure the accessibility of critical data.
EDGI is a national leader in monitoring and assessing modifications to federal environmental information resources. They have gained recognition for their work in highlighting the impacts of the Trump administration on environmental policies and practices. Their efforts have been covered by major media outlets, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and CNN.
One of EDGI's notable successes was raising awareness about the removal of climate change pages from federal websites during the Trump administration. They also drew attention to the reduction in the use of the term climate change on federal websites. Furthermore, they documented the decline in the Environmental Protection Agency's enforcement of environmental laws.
EDGI's work extends beyond monitoring and reporting. They have developed open-source comparison software integrated into the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine, allowing the public to track changes on websites. They have also advocated for the preservation of public web archives and created a searchable repository of EPA disclosures obtained through the Freedom of Information Act.
Through their research and advocacy, EDGI aims to strengthen the Environmental Right to Know, promote environmental and information governance, and empower communities to protect their well-being and enact change
