About EPA
The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) is Aotearoa New Zealand’s national environmental regulator. Its role is to protect the environment and the people who live and work in it, supporting a better way of life. The EPA oversees a broad range of environmental and public safety matters, including hazardous substances, new organisms, climate-related activity under the Emissions Trading Scheme, and marine activities in the Exclusive Economic Zone.
Rather than selling consumer products, the EPA provides regulatory services, information and tools for the public, businesses and other organisations. Its online databases cover chemical classifications, approved hazardous substances and controls, chemical inventories, and applications under the HSNO and Resource Management Acts. Guidance helps businesses understand requirements for importing or manufacturing substances, approvals, permits, safety data sheets, labelling and compliance. The authority also manages applications and consultations, monitors and enforces relevant rules, and publishes news, alerts, reports and educational resources. Community initiatives connect people with environmental science and local places, while public consultation processes enable New Zealanders to contribute to decisions.
