About East Rockingham Waste to Energy
East Rockingham Waste to Energy (ERWtE) is a waste-to-energy project developing a large-scale facility in Rockingham, south of Perth, Western Australia. Located on a 10-hectare site at 26 Office Road, the plant is designed to process up to 300,000 tonnes of residual waste each year. Its purpose is to provide an alternative to landfill while recovering energy from waste that would otherwise be discarded.
When operational, the facility is expected to divert approximately 95.8% of residual waste from landfill and generate 28.9 megawatts of electricity, with about half classified as renewable. The project estimates this output could provide power for around 36,000 homes. ERWtE describes the facility as a cost-effective waste treatment solution and a source of dispatchable energy, with anticipated environmental, economic and social benefits for the Perth community, including around 50 jobs over the project’s life.
The project’s technology is being delivered by Hitachi Zosen Inova, an engineering, procurement and construction contractor with extensive global waste-to-energy experience.
