About ESG 1851
Elberfelder Chess Society 1851 (ESG 1851) is a long-established chess club based in Wuppertal, Germany, welcoming players of different ages and experience levels. Founded in 1851, the society brings together people who enjoy playing chess, learning the game and discussing strategy. It fields multiple teams in official league competitions and shares match reports, results, club news and information about upcoming events through its website.
The club offers regular activities for juniors and adults, including youth training and tournaments, senior events, free play and team matches. Wednesday sessions include training with FIDE Masters as well as open play; Friday activities include youth training and tournaments alongside senior events and casual games. The society also organizes competitions such as club championships and blitz tournaments, held at its club rooms or other event venues. In 2026, it marks its 175th anniversary with a blitz chess event. ESG 1851 invites local chess enthusiasts, families, beginners and experienced competitors to visit, meet members and take part in its community.
