About ESJF European Jewish Cemeteries Initiative
The ESJF European Jewish Cemeteries Initiative is a non-profit organization established in 2015 by Rabbi Isaac Schapira. Based in Germany, their primary mission is to preserve Jewish cemeteries throughout Europe, with a particular focus on regions affected by the devastating consequences of the Shoah. These cemeteries have been neglected for over 80 years, and without intervention, they are at risk of complete disappearance, taking with them the last physical remnants of ancient Jewish communities.
Since its inception, the ESJF has successfully fenced and demarcated over 250 Jewish cemeteries across Central and Eastern Europe. Funding from the Federal Republic of Germany and generous private donors has made this possible. Additionally, the ESJF is undertaking the immense task of mapping and monitoring Jewish burial sites in collaboration with the European Union.
In addition to their preservation efforts, the ESJF actively engages with teachers, students, local historians, librarians, and museum workers. Through educational outreach programs, publications, and local engagement, they encourage reflection on the history of European Jewish communities, using Jewish cemeteries as a lens for understanding and preserving their cultural heritage.
