Essence of India

Essence of India is a community-led series of celebrations dedicated to sharing the breadth and vitality of Indian culture. Founded in 2012, the annual event was held in August in Boston Metro West, bringing local communities together to explore India’s diverse heritage and its connections with life in the United States. Its organizers envisioned a collective identity that embraces the many cultures, experiences, and expressions of India while creating opportunities for people to discover what is inspiring, entertaining, and meaningful in that heritage.

Rather than focusing only on singing and dance, Essence of India presents Indian culture through a wide range of traditions and ideas. Its themes include modern and classical practices, festivals, great epics, cultural icons, achievements in science and the arts, and the many crafts, cultures, and languages found across India. The series was designed as a shared effort, inviting people to engage with Indian heritage in its fullest variety. Its seventh and final celebration was announced for August 18, 2018, in Acton, Massachusetts.
