Essence of Jiu Jitsu is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy in Blackburn, Victoria, offering training for people of different ages, experience levels and athletic abilities. Its programs present Jiu-Jitsu as a martial art and practical self-defence discipline, with an emphasis on managing distance, controlling positions and using technique rather than relying on size or strength. The academy offers an introductory course of ten classes to teach core concepts and safe training practices before students progress to fundamentals.

Fundamentals classes develop broadly applicable skills through a structured curriculum, positional games and controlled sparring. Advanced classes build on this foundation with in-depth work on positions, transitions and submissions, supported by instructor guidance. Intermediate and advanced students can also attend the Jiu-Jitsu Research and Development Lab, where positional problem-solving, task-based games and focused sparring rounds encourage experimentation and skill development.

Classes run on weekday evenings, with additional Saturday sessions for introductory, fundamentals and advanced training
