Essential Somatics

Essential Somatics® helps people address chronic muscle pain, stiffness, and restricted movement through Clinical Somatic Education, a movement education approach based on the work of Thomas Hanna, Ph.D. The organization combines gentle, mindful movement with hands-on clinical techniques to support greater body awareness, mobility, comfort, and ease. Its programs are presented as suitable for people of all ages and abilities, with an emphasis on skills participants can use independently in everyday life.

For those exploring the method, Essential Somatics offers a free introductory mini course covering persistent stress, the principles of Clinical Somatic Education, and four basic movements. People can also learn through online and in-person workshops, retreats, and movement programs. Those seeking individual support can use the site’s practitioner resources, while professionals can pursue training and certification to teach Essential Somatics movements or provide clinical sessions.

The organization also shares articles, events, and email resources for its community. Based in Manitou Springs, Colorado, Essential Somatics serves both people interested in personal movement practice and those seeking professional training.
