The European Spallation Source (ESS) is an innovative research infrastructure project, aiming to establish the world’s most powerful accelerator-based neutron source. Located near Lund, Sweden, this multi-disciplinary facility is designed to enable groundbreaking research across various fields including materials science, energy, health, and environmental studies. ESS provides advanced tools and techniques for researchers, functioning as a giant microscope to explore atomic structures and material properties.

The facility includes a state-of-the-art linear proton accelerator, a high-capacity helium-cooled tungsten target, and 15 specialized neutron instruments. It supports around 2,000 guest researchers annually, facilitating experiments that address pressing societal challenges. With dedicated hubs like the Data Management and Software Centre in Copenhagen, ESS also leads in the management and analysis of vast data sets, enhancing scientific discovery.
