Estuary 101

The Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program works to protect and preserve the estuaries and waterways of the Pensacola and Perdido Bay region. Its public education and community programs explain how estuaries—where freshwater and seawater meet—support wildlife, local livelihoods, and the regional economy. The organization invites individuals, businesses, and community groups to take a pledge, volunteer, donate, sponsor events, or participate in internships and its Estuary Explorer program.

Its environmental work includes educating local students, monitoring seagrass, removing litter and debris, supporting local environmental projects, and promoting sustainable living shoreline construction. The program also engages boaters and anglers through manatee outreach and conducts fish trawling surveys to estimate juvenile fish abundance. Residents can learn practical ways to help, from creating bay-friendly yards to reducing plastic bag use. Through these services and opportunities, the organization brings supporters together to keep local waters healthy and preserve the region’s natural habitats for future generations. It is based in Pensacola, Florida, and provides information and involvement opportunities through its website.
