Etherbulb turns an ESP32-C3 smart bulb into a radio-aware lamp: it listens on 2.4 GHz and colours the room by what it hears – Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, FPV video, mobile networks. Open source, receive-only.

Etherbulb is an open-source project that turns compatible ESP32-C3 smart bulbs into radio-aware lamps. Its firmware uses the bulb’s Wi-Fi radio as a receive-only sensor, detecting signal patterns in the 2.4 GHz neighborhood and translating them into coloured light. Supported signals include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee and Thread, some 2.4 GHz analog video, and selected mobile-network bands. Users can choose colours and adjust brightness and sensitivity, with stronger detected signals producing brighter light. Etherbulb identifies signal characteristics rather than decoding communications, and it does not transmit on the frequencies it monitors.
The project provides GPL-3.0 firmware for compatible hardware, including the Athom/IoTorero LB01-12W-E27 ESP32-C3 bulb and the BTF-Lighting SP530E LED strip controller. A browser-based dashboard hosted by the bulb offers a live spectrum view, signal presets, colour controls, and configuration options, without requiring an app or cloud service. Bulb installation and firmware setup are designed to be completed through Wi-Fi; the strip controller requires an initial UART flash. Etherbulb also documents supported hardware, signal capabilities, setup steps, and technical limitations.
