About International Trade Centre
The Ethical Fashion Initiative (EFI) is a renowned brand and flagship program of the International Trade Centre, a joint agency of the United Nations and the World Trade Organization. Their mission is to foster sustainable and inclusive development in emerging economies by promoting trade and employment in the creative and cultural industries, particularly fashion and textiles.
Since its establishment in 2009, EFI has collaborated with numerous designers, artisans, entrepreneurs, and global brands in the fashion and creative industries. They work with partner social enterprises across different regions, including Kenya, Burkina Faso, Uzbekistan, Mali, and Tajikistan, to support artisans and small producers with production, trade, and logistics. This collaboration enables them to create stronger communities and bring beautifully handcrafted products to international markets.
EFI's Accelerator program is highly successful, as it identifies promising fashion and homeware brands in Africa and Asia and helps them develop their creative potential and commercial viability. They also prioritize social and environmental sustainability, utilizing their expertise to establish sustainable supply chains and assess risks through their due diligence framework.
By creating dignified jobs and contributing to various Sustainable Development Goals, EFI strives to make a positive impact on disadvantaged communities in Africa and Central Asia. They have a strong network of fashion and homeware brands, major distributors, and industry partners, as well as the support of the European Commission and other donors.
Under the leadership of founder Simone Cipriani, EFI is a key player in the ethical supply chain movement, transforming fashion into a vehicle for poverty reduction and women's empowerment. They continue to innovate and advocate for the role of fashion in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
