The European Union Advisory Mission in Iraq (EUAM Iraq) was launched in October 2017 in response to a request by the Iraqi government for advice on how to undertake civilian security sector reform (SSR). The Mission had an initial mandate of one year (until 17 October 2018), which based on an assessment of Iraqi needs and progress made was extended until April 2020. On 7 April, 2020, the EU Council extended the mandate of the Mission until 30 April 2026 following the assessment of Iraqi needs. EUAM Iraq is based in Baghdad, and the mission’s overarching task is to support coherent implementation of the civilian related aspects of the Iraqi National Security Strategy and the security sector reform. To provide advice and assistance to the Iraqi authorities at strategic level to identify and define the requirements for the coherent implementation of the Security Sector Reform civilian related aspects of the Iraqi National Security Strategy and associated plans;

About EUAM Iraq
The European Union Advisory Mission in Iraq (EUAM Iraq) is an EU mission launched in October 2017 at the request of the Iraqi government. Based in Baghdad, it supports civilian security sector reform and the coherent implementation of the civilian aspects of Iraq’s National Security Strategy and related plans. Its work provides strategic-level advice and assistance to Iraqi authorities, guided by assessed needs and demand.
The mission’s stated aim is to help build a more resilient, sovereign, stable and safer Iraq, while contributing to an effective and sustainable security sector reform process. Its mandate, initially set for one year, was extended in response to assessments of Iraqi needs and progress; in April 2020, the EU Council extended it through 30 April 2026. EUAM Iraq works with partners and maintains an international and national staff presence.
