EFFA Farriers

The European Federation of Farriers Associations (EFFA) is a European organization founded in 1997 to improve horse welfare by promoting skilled, humane trimming and shoeing. It brings together farriery associations from 15 European nations, providing a forum for sharing knowledge, addressing common challenges, and developing consistent professional standards. EFFA works to establish a basic standard of competence and supports member countries in aligning national training and qualifications with it.

Its work includes developing training and examination standards, manuals, and eHoof, an online learning tool for farriers and apprentices. EFFA recognizes qualifying national schemes and awards the Certified Eurofarrier designation to individuals who complete accredited training. It also encourages continuing professional development and closer cooperation between farriers and veterinary professionals, particularly in therapeutic hoof care.

To advance learning and professional practice, EFFA organizes biennial competitions in shoemaking and shoeing, alternating with educational events for farriers in training. The federation also represents the profession in discussions with European institutions and equine veterinary organizations, and promotes safe working practices and public understanding of farriery.
