The European Observatory on Memories (EUROM) is a network and research initiative of the University of Barcelona’s Solidarity Foundation. It explores how memories of Europe’s past are preserved, interpreted and transmitted, with particular attention to contested histories, democratic freedoms and the legacies of repression and colonialism. EUROM brings together research, education, participation and public engagement through projects, events and resources designed for diverse audiences.
Its activities include international conferences and seminars, educational programs, commemorations, exhibitions and online campaigns. Current work addresses topics such as forced labour under Francoism, colonial revisionism, dissonant heritage, memory sites and tourism, and the ethical use of artificial intelligence in historical documentation. EUROM also develops collaborative projects, including Synthetic Memories: Women, Memory and Freedom, which combines oral testimony and artificial intelligence to preserve personal memories.
The observatory shares its work through books, publications, podcasts, videos, stories and a magazine. By connecting researchers, institutions and communities, EUROM supports discussion about how difficult histories shape society today and how memories can be responsibly preserved and communicated.
