About ESS
ESS, the European Spallation Source, is a scientific research organisation developing a facility for neutron-based research. Its work supports scientists investigating materials and natural processes, with research areas spanning chemistry, magnetic and electronic phenomena, engineering materials, geosciences, archaeology, heritage conservation, life science, soft condensed matter and particle physics. The organisation’s instruments include BEER, BIFROST, DREAM, ESTIA, LOKI, NMX and ODIN, alongside specialist laboratories, sample environments and scientific computing services.
ESS also develops the technologies needed to operate its facility, including accelerator, target, cryogenic, vacuum, radio-frequency and control systems. Its construction programme covers the facility building, site, architecture, sustainability, licensing and safety. Through partnerships and in-kind contributions, ESS works with a wider European neutron research community, and provides information for suppliers and procurement partners. The organisation shares scientific publications, news, events and progress reports, and offers career opportunities, including information for people considering work and life in Sweden or Denmark. ESS reports that it has completed Beam on Dump 2 as it advances toward producing its first neutrons.
