EU SST

EU SST is an initiative under the EU Space Programme focused on enhancing the safety and security of European economies, citizens, and societies through advanced space surveillance and tracking capabilities. Launched following the 2021 Regulation by the European Parliament, EU SST symbolizes collaboration among 15 EU Member States, including Germany, France, Italy, and Spain, to address the growing complexities and risks in space environments. The initiative emphasizes the need to mitigate threats such as in-orbit collisions and uncontrolled re-entries of debris, which can pose significant risks to both space assets and ground safety.

EU SST operates a network of sophisticated ground-based and space-based sensors that survey and track various space objects. Through its SST Service Provision Portal, EU SST delivers essential services like Collision Avoidance, Re-entry Analysis, and Fragmentation Analysis to over 200 organizations, ensuring the protection of more than 600 satellites from potential hazards. The ongoing development of these services aims to create a robust, autonomous European capability to safeguard vital space-based applications necessary for communications, navigation, and observation.
