The Evelyn A. Russell Scholar Award is an educational initiative established to encourage Brooklyn youth to explore reading, writing, and the arts. It honors Evelyn A. Russell, a P.S. 25 alumna who loved language arts, earned an English degree from Brooklyn College, and worked as an editor at Bowker Books and Congressional Quarterly. Her children and her longtime friend Bernice Green created the award in her memory, reflecting Evelyn’s belief that books can take readers to new places and that learning should continue throughout life.
The award recognizes outstanding students at P.S. 25 The Eubie Blake School who demonstrate a commitment to and appreciation for language arts. Students apply by submitting a 300-to-500-word essay to their teacher on why reading is important to them. The top three essays are forwarded to the Russell family, which selects winners based on how well they address the topic, their vocabulary, and their creativity. Recipients receive a certificate and a cash award.
