About EWA
EWA, the Ethno-ornithology World Atlas, is a collaborative platform formed by Oxford University’s Department of Zoology, the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography, and BirdLife International. It aims to unite people across the globe in the conservation of birds by fostering the sharing of cultural knowledge and traditions related to avian species. Recognizing the deep connections between humanity and birds, EWA builds bridges among Indigenous communities, conservationists, and academic institutions to celebrate diverse cultural understandings of ornithology.
Utilizing the Mukurtu platform, EWA empowers communities to manage their digital heritage in culturally sensitive ways, emphasizing ethical practices in the field of ethnobiology. Contributors can control access to their materials, ensuring respect for community-specific knowledge. EWA’s commitment to collaboration promotes a broader transformation in research methodologies, enhancing the dialogue between local peoples and external researchers. With a focus on between cultural diversity and biological conservation, EWA stands as a vital resource for those passionate about birds and their significance across cultures.
