About EXARC
EXARC is a global network of professionals who are actively engaged in archaeological open-air museums, experimental archaeology, ancient technology, and interpretation. Their aim is to facilitate the exchange of experience, tips & tricks, and best practices among individuals in these fields, while also working towards improving the overall quality of (experimental) work and archaeological open-air museums on a broader scale.
One of their prominent platforms is the EXARC JOURNAL, which serves as a discussion platform for the exchange of experience and information related to archaeological experiment, (re)construction, the use of models in education, and live interpretation including 'living history'. The journal offers the opportunity to publish articles with the support of an international editorial board and also provides a platform for advertising to reach a wide audience across the globe, including archaeological open-air museums.
In addition to the journal, EXARC organizes two series of international conferences, namely the REARC series in North America and the EAC series in Europe. They also support and co-organize various other conferences and workshops within their four main themes.
With members scattered worldwide, EXARC facilitates the exchange of knowledge, experience, and best practices among professionals in various aspects of archaeology and museum management. Their association covers topics such as public archaeology, experimental archaeology, ancient skills, living history, interpretation, staff exchange, visitor dialogue, marketing & communication, and museum management.
EXARC also collaborates with several important organizations such as ICOM, NEMO, and REARC, aiming to establish a mutually supportive network. The association has initiated multiple international projects, some of which have been funded by the European Union. They continuously develop new ideas and discuss them with their members, and are also open to partnering with non-EXARC members if it benefits their four core themes.
Notably, EXARC has been granted the Cultural ANBI status by the Dutch Tax Service, recognizing it as an institution aimed at the Common Good. This status grants tax advantages to EXARC and also benefits its sponsors, contributors, and patrons who can deduct their donations from taxable income.
As a non-profit association, founded in 2003 in Denmark and registered in the Netherlands, EXARC relies on the generous support of individuals and organizations to fulfill its mission and ensure the success of the EXARC community.
