Exeter Equine Care Trust is a registered charity in England and Wales, founded in 2019 to provide retired horses and ponies with a permanent, caring home. Based at Hilltop Riding School in Exeter, the Trust builds on the longstanding work of Janet Portbury and follows a “home for life” philosophy. It takes in equines that may be difficult to rehome because of age, medical conditions or behaviour, offering them a safe retirement, companionship and ongoing care.
The charity’s residents include ponies and horses of different breeds and needs, some of whom also take part in activities such as agility with a community group. The Trust relies on volunteers and welcomes enquiries about volunteering, events and support. Donations help cover veterinary treatment, specialist supplements, worming, farrier visits, dental care and bedding. Supporters can make one-off or regular contributions, and annual sponsorship is also available. Alongside caring for its residents, the Trust is expanding educational services for disadvantaged adults and children, helping the local community experience the health and psychological benefits of being around horses and ponies.
