Exploratio Foundation is the institutional home of the Battlefield Archaeology Research Team (BART), an international, multidisciplinary group investigating the history and archaeology of warfare. Its work spans conflict sites from antiquity to more recent history, combining fieldwork with historical sources and technical survey. The invitation-only team brings together archaeologists, historians, journalists, and technical researchers to document and interpret battlefields for academic partners, museums, and heritage authorities.
Research methods include terrain analysis, metal-detection survey, and AI-aided analysis of field data. The Foundation has worked alongside universities and heritage institutions across Europe and welcomes new institutional partnerships for future projects. Its featured initiative, Rome Unearthed, examines the final decades of the Roman Republic, from the Gallic Wars through the civil wars. Since 2023, the team has surveyed one of the largest battlefields of the Roman world in cooperation with relevant heritage authorities.
Exploratio also supports collaboration through joint fieldwork, historical research, and public-engagement projects, and invites individuals and institutions to support its work.
