External Secrets Operator (ESO) is an open-source Kubernetes operator that helps teams synchronize secrets from external secret management systems into Kubernetes. It connects to services such as AWS Secrets Manager, HashiCorp Vault, Google Cloud Secret Manager, Azure Key Vault, IBM Secrets Manager, CyberArk, and Pulumi ESC, along with many other supported providers. ESO reads data through external APIs and makes the selected values available as Kubernetes Secrets.
The project provides custom resources that offer a consistent way to configure integrations and manage secret synchronization. Its core resources include ExternalSecret, SecretStore, and ClusterSecretStore, with additional resources and features for generators, push secrets, and related workflows. Documentation covers installation, API concepts, provider setup, security, operations, and practical examples for tools and platforms such as FluxCD and Jenkins.
ESO is developed with contributions from its users and community. The project invites participation through development meetings, Kubernetes Slack, issue reporting, questions, and code contributions. Its documentation includes getting-started guidance, API references, upgrade information, and community resources for teams adopting or contributing to the operator.
