The Federal Acquisition Institute (FAI) was established in 1976 with the goal of fostering and promoting the development of a federal acquisition workforce. As part of its mission, FAI facilitates career development and strategic human capital management for the acquisition workforce. It works closely with organizations such as the Office of Federal Procurement Policy, Chief Acquisition Officer Council, and the Interagency Acquisition Career Management Council to develop strategies to meet the needs of the current and future acquisition workforce.

FAI supports over 50 comprehensive training courses that cover a wide range of topics, from entry-level courses to specialized training in areas such as risk management and earned value management. These courses are available in both traditional and distance learning settings. In addition to training, FAI also conducts research, promotes professionalism, and improves acquisition workforce management.
