American Forest Foundation

The Family Forest Carbon Program, a collaborative initiative by the American Forest Foundation and The Nature Conservancy, aims to empower small forest owners in the U.S. to combat climate change. Recognizing that nearly 40% of the nation’s forests are privately owned, the program guides family forest owners in enhancing forest health while generating income through carbon credits. Participants can adopt climate-smart forestry practices that improve carbon sequestration, boost biodiversity, and provide sustainable wood products.

The program is designed to be accessible, offering tailored support including professional forester consultations to create personalized forest management plans. By implementing scientifically backed practices, landowners contribute to critical ecological restoration while benefiting from annual payments tied to their sustainable efforts. The Family Forest Carbon Program not only fosters a healthier environment but also establishes a financial incentive for small landowners, making a significant impact on climate action across various U.S. regions. Through this initiative, family forest owners play an essential role in building resilient ecosystems and addressing the climate crisis.
