Family Spirit is a groundbreaking home visiting program rooted in evidence-based practices and developed explicitly for Indigenous communities in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health. This culturally tailored initiative empowers caregivers during pregnancy and early childhood by enhancing their knowledge and skills for optimal child development. With an extensive curriculum comprising 63 lessons covering crucial developmental stages from pregnancy to age three, Family Spirit aims to foster physical, cognitive, and social-emotional growth in children.
Designed and rigorously evaluated by partnering with tribal communities such as the Navajo, White Mountain Apache, and San Carlos Apache, the program promotes essential life skills, health care access, and community service links for families. Since its inception in 1995, over 160 sites across 24 states have adopted the Family Spirit model, with more than 800 Health Educators trained. Family Spirit's ongoing mission is to prepare children for school success while addressing the unique needs of each family, ensuring a supportive environment for growth and development.
