Future Architecture of the Network (FAN), also known as Te Whatunga Hiko, is a New Zealand research programme exploring how the electricity system can support sustainable decarbonisation. Funded through the New Zealand Government’s Strategic Science Investment Fund, within the Advanced Energy Technology Platform, the programme investigates what the future power system could look like through 2050 and beyond.
FAN’s vision is an efficient, low-carbon, reliable and resilient electricity network built around hybrid alternating-current (AC) and direct-current (DC) transmission and distribution. Its research examines how greater use of DC conveyance and power-electronic technologies could be integrated across the grid, from high- to low-voltage networks. Areas considered include renewable wind and solar generation, electric vehicles, batteries, hydrogen storage, and household technologies such as LED lighting and computers.
The programme aims to develop knowledge and capability, identify future network architectures and transition pathways, and inform technology development, design processes, standards and regulations. Its work is organised across four research workstreams, alongside Vision Mātauranga, and is shared through publications and programme updates.
