The Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) is a United States federal disclosure law enacted in 1938. It requires certain agents of foreign principals who engage in political activities or other activities specified by statute to periodically disclose their relationships, activities, and related receipts and disbursements. These disclosures help the government and the public assess the work of people acting on behalf of foreign principals.
The U. S. Department of Justice’s National Security Division administers and enforces the law through its FARA Unit, part of the Counterintelligence and Export Control Section.
