About Farmers' Markets Ontario
Farmers' Markets Ontario is the official organization representing over 180 farmers' markets across the province. With a primary mandate to provide a wide variety of services to its members, they offer everything from liability insurance to management, government relations, marketing, and professional development. Farmers' Markets Ontario aims to promote member markets, verified local farmers through their MyPick program, and the benefits of shopping and supporting local farmers' markets to Ontario consumers.
The history of farmers' markets in Ontario dates back to 1801 when Kingston became home to the first market. Over time, farmers' markets in the province experienced a decline due to the rise of shopping malls. However, thanks to the efforts of Bob Chorney and a group of dedicated supporters, Farmers' Markets Ontario was established in 1991.
Today, fueled by the demand for local food and products, farmers' markets serve as essential retail hubs, connecting farmers with shoppers through direct sales. Over the past decade, farmers' market sales in Ontario have seen significant growth, estimated at 10-12% annually, with an economic impact of over $2. 5 billion.
Farmers' Markets Ontario has been instrumental in advocating for markets with municipalities, regulators, and potential funders to ensure the health and sustainability of Ontario farmers' markets. With over 180 markets and counting, FMO continues to support the growth of farmers' markets for the benefit of local farmers, local food, and Ontario consumers
